Twice A Year! Checkups in Gastonia

An appointment with Gastonia Dental Group two times a year is essential to your dental health, and to your overall health. By seeing us for a dental checkup every six months, you’ll get the peace of mind that comes with knowing your teeth and gums are healthy, and have a great smile, to boot.

A typical appointment at Gastonia Dental Group is in two parts. First, one of our hygienists gives your teeth a thorough cleaning. That in itself is worth coming in for. But part two, the checkup, is just as important, because we’ll take x-rays, check for any cavities, make sure your gums are healthy, and look for signs of any problems like bruxism, also known as teeth grinding.

Seeing us twice a year is also a great way to protect your overall health. We won’t give you a wellness exam like your doctor would, of course. But there are more than a hundred systemic diseases that can be detected in the mouth. We can find signs of diseases before you even know about them.

In between your visits, make sure you take care of your teeth and gums at home. That means a daily regimen of flossing and brushing. We recommend at least twice a day; after every meal is even better. That way you are consistently removing that plaque that is constantly forming on your teeth.

If you haven’t scheduled your next checkup and cleaning with Gastonia Dental Group, pick up the phone and give us a call. We also provide pediatric dentistry. Make an appointment today.

Teeth Cleanings in Gastonia

Many of our patients don’t particularly care for having their teeth cleaned. And we certainly understand! After all, it isn’t much fun having your teeth and gums poked, prodded, and scraped. But the cleanings at Gastonia Dental Group are painless, and the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks.

Teeth cleanings begin with a careful examination of your teeth and gums. We look for any obvious decay or early signs of gum disease. This is the part where a hygienist slides a small mirror between the gums and cheeks. If there are any problems, we let the dentist know.

Next, the actual cleaning begins. Plaque is that gunky stuff that accumulates on the teeth. If it isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar, and can lead to tooth decay. We almost always find tartar, because there are always those hard-to-reach places that even the best home dental health routine can’t get.

Once all the tartar is scraped off, we use a special paste to brush your teeth. You’ve probably experienced it in the past: that gritty toothpaste that, along with a high-power electric brush, gets any remaining tartar off of the teeth. Sometimes patients say they’d like to have a toothpaste like that at home. But it’s pretty harsh stuff. A couple of times a year is okay, but if you used it every day it would wear down the enamel.

We conclude our teeth cleanings by flossing your teeth, followed by a rinse. This might not seem necessary, especially since a lot of patients brush and floss before their appointment. But this flossing ensures we get the last bits of debris from the cleaning.

The Gastonia Dental Group team urges you to maintain a good home dental health routine, and to see us twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. We’ll answer any questions you might have, and address any issues. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment with us today.
